A combination of new and old techniques, metalsmithing combined with precious metal clay, has made it possible for the creation of my most recent jewelry designs. These creations combine materials of fine silver, sterling silver, and gemstones (cabochons and faceted stones), and some include beading or wire as well. In addition to my focus on pendants and necklaces, I will soon be offering earring designs and bracelets, as well as a larger variety of ring and toering designs. Art and Business, a balancing act

One important aspect of trying to make a living off of one's own work is dancing with the left-brained nitty-gritty business of marketing and promotion. I was talking with another artist about balancing creativity and promotion earlier today, and it made me reflect on how I undertake the business side of art while allowing for creative flow...staying true to my artistic vision and being an active creator, while also actively engaging in my art as a business. So often, it is easy to lose sight of our unique vision when we turn our art into business. This is my "balancing act".

For me, I think what it comes down to is that I respect my muses call to creative action by dropping everything when I'm inspired. If that means staying up until 2am or 4am because of my work schedule then I just do it, knowing that if I wait until my day off or a more convenient time, the muse will probably move on and leave me creatively "dry" and unmotivated. I also try not to let questions like "will this sell" or "is this marketable" come into my work while I'm creating. I try to be true to my vision and just let it flow.

When I'm creatively exhausted, that's when I try to push myself with marketing and promotion...and that's when I try to figure out HOW to promote what I've created, rather than trying to create what is marketable. I also use this creative down-time to develop new product lines that will be easier to market.

This entire cycle of promotion and creation might happen in a 24 hour period or sometimes might be weeks of just marketing until I can get into a creative groove again.

Also, when I'm in the creative groove and I have to leave my own work to do someone else's (a.k.a. the "real job"), I usually take with me creative task(s) that I keep in mind all day...it might be thinking through the color-scheme of a painting or trouble-shooting some issue that is hindering my creative work...or if I'm working on jewelry, sometimes I'll just wear the unfinished piece so that it's right in front of my face all day. That keeps my mind creatively engaged and focused while I work the bill-paying job, and allows me to jump right back into my artwork at the end of the workday. (Luckily, our brains are capable of all this mental multi-tasking...in fact, from another friend of mine, I have been assured that our brains are capable of even more without fear of overload).

So, anyway, that's how I do it. It's not always easy to jump back into pure, unclouded creativity after weeks of nothing but marketing, and especially in a tough economy, but as soon as I get a spark of inspiration I jump on it and I try my best to keep it pure and from my soul.

I've also noticed that the more pure creative energy I put into my work, the better I do with sales and opportunities...So I try not to second-guess my customers/target-market anymore.

An "environmental factor" that keeps me creating is that my home space IS my work studio space. I have unfinished cement sculptures standing in the kitchen and unfinished paintings lining the walls of the living room, so it's not like I can just shut the door of my studio and forget about my artwork until I'm ready to open the door. When I get home at night after work, I'm in my work studio staring my creative process right in the face. That makes it pretty easy to jump right in. I'll pick up a piece of charcoal thinking I'm just going to make one line correction and all of a sudden it's hours later and my hands are coated in pastel dust.

While this home environment might not work for everyone, especially those artist's with large families and young children, I find it to be the ideal arrangement to keep me living the artist's life.

I maintain balance and stay focused with my artistic pursuits just by keeping my work visual at all times, being willing to create from my soul when inspiration strikes, and taking care of business in the meantime.

A peek inside the studio

It's a new year and like most of you reading this, I also have plenty of resolutions and intentions for the year ahead, most of mine involving a walk on the creative side. Currently, the studio is an absolute mess of paintings and sculptures in various stages of completion. I don't often invite inquiring eyes to probe my creative world until my work has been given it's final polish, but in the above photos you are able to view some of my work while in the messy, ugly, and unrefined stages. Enjoy!

New work

My most recent painting, "Birthing Beauty" is currently on exhibit at Optimo Cafe, host of the Origins Exhibit, through the end of November. This piece is charcoal and pastel on a 24"x36" pressed wood panel. I'm also currently working on another 24"x36" painting in my Open Heart series of work, as well as making up some larger hardboard panels for my feminist "Redefining Eve" series in a 36"x48" format.
In addition to new paintings, I am also working to transform some of my painted images into three dimensional sculptural work. Many of you saw some of my small sculptures as well as my larger 3.5ft "open heart"themed sculpture exhibited at the Harvest Celebration Art Event in early October. I now have several other large wire armatures in progress which should be ready for cement application within the next week or two.
As always, I am working on my jewelry line and keeping it updated with new designs. I have some exciting new ring designs which will be ready for kiln-firing yet this weekend!

Viroqua Harvest Celebration and Parade

Have you heard about the fascinating new art event to take place on Saturday, October 9th in Viroqua? It's a celebration of the art, artists, and collective creativity of this region with handmade floats and giant puppets, tribal dancing, fire artists, fine art exhibit and more! Join us on October 9th at 2pm on Main Street for the handmade parade and then follow their lead into Eckhart Park around 3pm for the festivities in the park! Along with artist demonstrations and displays, there will face-painting, farmer vendors, square dancing and more! Don't want to wait? Seeking Inspiration

Today is a day like any other and yet also new and different. A fresh minute not yet lived, but being lived in the exact same routine as yesterday. Reaching out for a new experience within the confines of priorities is yielding a fresh sense of the same, the ordinary. And yet in this day, this everyday, I am searching for inspiration....what will inspire me today? The poetry of a friend perhaps? A bird or butterfly which crosses my path? A news headline or the book in my lap? An intriguing conversation with a stranger? I await my delightful muse while sipping my tea proactively.

With Leigh heading to Denmark, I'm taking over the Landmark Studio, located in room 102b, formerly named "Inner Heart Process Art Studio" and searching for a new name. In the meantime, the EXPRESS YOURSELF tagline for my art classes and creativity workshops will suffice as the classroom studio name. With Leigh's departure there is sadness and also excitement as the studio transforms. I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing Leigh "bon voyage!" with a heavy heart and yet excitement for her new beginnings in Denmark. Learning the ways of the web seems to be a daunting task, especially for the technologically-retarded artist...which I am ashamed to say I must fall into this catagory. However, I am slowly but surely digging myself out of the dark ages and trying to connect...via dial-up...to a fast-paced world wide web of international users. One resource which I have found invaluable is Rick Segel. His e-newsletter and seminars have provided me with boundless information to assist me in this struggle. I also recently invested in one of his books "The Essential Online Solution, the 5-step formula for small business success". I highly recommend this book especially for artists and entrepreneurs like me whose creativity and ingenuity doesn't always make it's way into our business practices. I combined the nature-enthusiast with geek yesterday and sprawled on my deck in the sun reading business how-to all day. Not only am I feeling renewed from being sun-kissed, but also the reading gave me a renewed enthusiasm for the business side of my art and surprisingly also the creative process. I am excited to try out Rick's suggestions on my website and have already begun to put some of what I'm learning into practice!

The sweet breath of inspiration

I'm currently in the midst of a burst of inspiration and creative enthusiasm. My muses have suddenly begun shouting so loudly that I not only have millions of new ideas, but answers to problem-solving on projects I've set on the "back burner". What this means to my collectors, is that you'll be seeing new work beginning to emerge within the next few weeks. Mainly you'll be seeing more sculptural work in cement, and many of these works will be large. I'm working my way to life-size (and larger), so there are many exciting developments in my technique. Some of the pieces I am currently working on include vortex-themed/"open-heart" figures, creation-themed sculptures including "Bursting Womb" and feminist/environmental works such as "Redefining Eve". Within the next few months I plan to have a line of cement sculptures out to compliment my new jewelry line which came to fruitation last year.

Some of the exciting new jewelry work I have coming out soon includes metalwork set with gemstones! I'm currently working on some exquisite pieces in bronze, copper or fine silver that include peridot, garnet, lapis and more! It's a really exciting line and something I've been looking forward to getting out (with delays and roadblocks) since college. Included in the mix are new pendant designs, and finally some rings and bracelets!

Inspiration

Finding inspiration during the day to day drudgery (or more like chaos) isn't always easy and finding time to breathe slowly enough to hear the muses whispering can be a huge challenge. Lately, I've found that letting go of everything I can not control helps to clear away a little madness, and then taking time to play with my art...for instance, last night I cut up magazine pictures and created a collage of everything I hope to manifest for myself and my art career. It was alot of fun (took a total of 20 minutes) and cleared my mind for ideas and inspiration for some "serious" art-making. Also, let the world around you inspire you...for instance, the past few days I've been battling a bat in the house. Finally, when I stopped seeing the little creature as an enemy and opened my mind to the possibility he may just be an inspiring art partner (I have some canvases to start for a halloween "Dreams" themed exhibit), I was able to work around him and finally he flew out the window on his own while I was immersed in my art.

The winged figure begins as a solitary manipulatible wire, wrapped continuously until it becomes strong mass: Initial weakness transformed into strength; Discovering strength, not as an absence of fragility, but as fragility transformed.

One purpose which I hope to achieve with my blog is to help connect artists with opportunities. The first opportunity I'd like to announce is that I've taken over organizing the art exhibits in the dining area of the Viroqua Food Cooperative and I'm looking for interested local and regional artists. Seeking Green in Winter

One way in which I maintain balance, stay spiritually uplifted, find inspiration, and fight off depression during the dark winter months is by visiting the local greenhouse, The Flower Basket in Viroqua. Unfortunately for my pocket-book, I'm rarely able to leave without bringing home another green friend. My home has become a greenhouse in itself, with 5 ft tall Ti Tree Dracaenas, Arabian Jasmines, Vining Passiflora, Orchids and Azaleas, Kalanchoe, Flowering Begonias, Philodendron, and of course an assortment of Cacti and Succulents. Being immersed in "green", while looking out the window at yet another crisply cold or blizzardy day is helping me make my way through winter, one day at a time. So instead of taking one look out the window, crawling back into bed and pulling the covers over my head for a continual winters nap, I focus on the abundant life inside my home. I pull out my yoga mat, or put on some rhythmic music and dance, and then begin another inspired day of art-making!

Some of my favorite books are phenomenal sources of inspiration for me. I can reread them (I've lost count of how many times certain books have been read) and still find new inspiration hidden within the pages. Some of my favorites include anthologies of poetry, classic works by women writers like Virginia Wolfe and Jane Austen, and topping the favorites list is Broken Wings, by Kahlil Gibran

At this time of year, with Thanksgiving only a few more days away, and the Christmas season approaching, I find myself thinking about our earth home and the many wondrous gifts from Mother Nature. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I'm reminded to slow down, "stop and smell the roses"...or more appropriately, stop to smell the pine-boughs...catch a snowflake on my tongue...admire the beauty of bare tree branches silhouetted against the crisp blue winter sky...remember to breathe, and be thankful for the air, the rivers and oceans, and the frozen earth underfoot. Thanks for the life you provide, Mother Earth. Let us not forget you this holiday season.
Most of my inspiration comes directly from Mother Earth, the Divine Feminine, Nature. So this holiday season, I'm grateful to the source of my inspiration!

Finding Inspiration

One of my favorite "inspirations" is a walk through our unique shops on Main Street. I especially love the texture and color in Ewetopia, the yarn shop. Sorry Walmart, but big box stores don't inspire me. On the other hand, chunky, home-spun fibers dangling from a rustic tree branch in a homey shop with a friendly face and welcoming advise...that inspires me. Right across the street, Art Vision, the local art supply store, and Bramble Booksellers, are some other favorite stops for inspiration. Who can not be inspired when elbow deep in paint brushes, pastels, and intriguing paper? And the smell of new books...uncreased spines just begging to be opened for the first time. A few blocks down is Gary's Rock Shop, with some of the most unique gifts Mother Nature has to offer...and Quilt Basket Creations, the fabric store. Another awesome shop--a short detour off Main Street, is the Driftless FairTrader, filled with unique, handmade, feel-good-about-spending-money stuff! Last, but not least, the Viroqua Food Cooperative with an awesome selection of local, organic FOOD...yup, food is always very inspiring!

Art Experience '08

After numerous challenges yesterday in the "completion process" of my art-pieces, I was relieved to drop them off at the Green Man Music Hall. Looking forward to being immersed in the art of 18 participating artists tonight at the reception. Sneak preview yesterday gave promise of an exciting, beautiful exhibit filled with intriguing thoughts and ideas, some political, some not so political, all inspired & created within the last few months. My contribution to the show, "Redefining Eve" and "Luna Emerging" explore female role models, environmentalism, and the re-emergence of a feminine consciousness.
